Ball Mudder

Perfect Baseballs for
Every Pitch

Ball Mudder’s mission is to develop, in coordination with MLB, a consistent and reliable method for applying Magic Mud (or any other substance) to official game baseballs to produce a standardized “mudded” baseball for use in all 30 Major League ballparks and organizations.

Currently, this process is performed by different individuals at each ballpark by hand. The variation seen from each person’s “rubbing” technique is concerning. The goal of this project is to automate the process of applying “Magic Mud” or any other substance to the baseballs and to guarantee that each ball going through the process is certified to MLB’s standard for game ready baseballs.

Ball Mudder will Standardize the Baseball 117 Years After the League was Started

The game’s history is filled with the human element as a major part of the game, and that was in part, a thrill of the game.

The game of baseball has become more and more competitive with small differences in human elements having significant impact on who wins and loses.  And, winning means millions of dollars for owners, players, and sponsors.  While the human element was once a topic of water cooler conversation the day after the game, it has the potential to affect the game’s integrity and affect an entire generation who expect a fair game. A game with little or no inconsistencies so each game is played fairly and equaly.  The league has a responsibility to the players and the fans to remove any opportunities for inconsistencies where and when possible.

The Ball Mudder

There is a difference among all balls pitched in every MLB stadium, because not every ball is equal.

Yes, they roll off the production line equal within quality parameters and are then delivered to the stadiums in such a manner. But what happens next is inconsistent with MLB’s ongoing effort to standardize every aspect of the game. The balls are “mudded” using an 80 year old technique that has its limitations for accuracy and opens opportunity for teams to exploit the human element of mudding the baseballs for the benefit of the pitcher and hitter. The ball is the biggest common denominator in measuring the equality of all games. Simply put, the Ball Mudder delivers an accurate and consistent baseball for every pitch.
